Technical Data
Datasheet cfusonic ultrasonic level sensor datasheet

Designed and manufactured by Control Focus this unit is intended for
OEM applications. The SR-C sensor series use ultrasonic technology
to provide a low cost non-contact method of detecting level,
presence/absence, volume, proximity and distance measurements.
This versatility makes ultrasonics ideal for a variety of applications.
Its features are:
  • Works on solids, liquids and soft targets such as plastic, linen
    and paper.
  • Measurement ranges from 0.15m to 5m.
  • Accuracy at +/-1% over entire range.
  • Automatic temperature compensation to maintain accuracy.
  • Two independent NPN open collector outputs manifest as
set points to connect to an external controller or other process.
  • Set points are user settable through on-board push-buttons and
serial commands via the RS485 port.
  • Status indicator for each Set point.
  • Remote communications through RS485 interface.
Up to 32 independently addressed SR-C sensors can be
connected and polled for proximity, set point events and
    temperature data.
This ultrasonic level and distance sensing module is a low cost, high
performance solution for OEM users wishing to incorporate ultrasonic
level sensing functionality into their own products.

This free application program allows users to quickly set setpoints,
parameters, and read data from the Sonicranger.

Principles of ultrasonic level and range measurements.

The Sonicranger ultrasonic module is basically a unit that transmits and receives a pulse of ultrasonic sound. The sound wave is created at a frequency of 50kHz which is outside the range of normal human hearing. When emitted in pulses of small duration the sound wave will travel away from the unit until it either dissipates, or it encounters an object. When the sound wave is projected towards an object or fluid it will be reflected from the surface and if positioned correctly the reflected beam will travel back to the ultrasonic transmitter where it will be detected. Since the speed of a sound wave is known the distance to the reflecting surface can be calculated by measuring the total time taken for the return pulse to arrive.

There are many factors that influence the speed of sound and these factors can cause readings to be inaccurate. However with today's low cost microprocessor technology many of these variables can be factored into the equation and eliminated. Temperature change is one such variable. The SR-C sensor modules use internal temperature compensation for changes in speed of sound due to temperature, and so provides accurate and stable readings.

Applications for the Sonicranger ultrasonic distance sensor.

ultrasonic fluid level measurement
Sonicranger is ideal for tank fluid level measurements. The open collector transistor outputs may be used to activate other processes, for example fill or empty tank operations. The trigger levels for these outputs are settable by simple push button operations or via serial commands on the serial port of the unit. Additionally continuous distance readings can be obtained at all times.

ultrasonic detection of items on automation line
Sonicranger ultrasonic ranging and sensing is also used in process control applications in factory automation. For example involving sensing objects for size anomalies on an assembly line, or simple ultrasonic proximity detection.
Other applications include detection of objects for purposes of safety and positioning. Roll diameter sensing of steel, textile, paper or plastic can be monitored and aid in process control.

Communicating with the Sonicranger via the RS485 interface.

The Sonicranger is designed to operate as a single unit in master mode, or as one or more units connected together as a network of slave units. In its factory set configuration the Sonicranger acts a master unit sending out distance readings every 2 seconds automatically.

When configured as a slave unit each ultrasonic sensor module waits for addressed commands to be received before responding with the required action.
